Sowiththatinmind,Idlikeyoujusttotakeamomenttothink,whendidyoulasttakeanytimetodonothing?Just10minutes,undisturbed?AndwhenIsaynothing,Idomeannothing.Sothatsnoemailing,texting,noInter,noTV,nochatting,noeating,noreading,notevensittingtherereminiscingaboutthepastorplanningforthefuture.Simplydoingnothing.Iseealotofveryblankfaces.(Laughter)Mythinkingis,youprobablyhavetogoalongwayback. Andthisisanextraordinarything,right?Weretalkingaboutourmind.Themind,ourmostvaluableandpreciousresource,throughwhichweexperienceeverysinglemomentofourlife,themindthatwerelyupontobehappy,content,emotionallystableasindividuals,andatthesametimetobekindandthoughtfulandconsiderateinourrelationshipswithothers.Thisisthesamemindthatwedependupontobefocused,creative,spontaneous,andtoperformatourverybestineverythingthatwedo.Andyet,wedonttakeanytimeouttolookafterit.Infact,wespendmoretimelookingafterourcars,ourclothesandourhairthanweokay,maybenotourhair,butyouseewhereImgoing. Theresult,ofcourse,isthatwegetstressed.Youknow,themindwhizzesawaylikeawashingmachinegoingroundandround,lotsofdifficult,confusingemotions,andwedontreallyknowhowtodealwiththat,andthesadfactisthatwearesodistractedthatwerenolongerpresentintheworldinwhichwelive.Wemissoutonthethingsthataremostimportanttous,andthecrazythingisthateverybodyjustassumes,well,thatsthewaylifeis,sowevejustkindofgottogetonwithit.Thatsreallynothowithastobe. SoIwasabout11whenIwentalongtomyfirstmeditationclass.Andtrustme,ithadallthestereotypesthatyoucanimagine,thesittingcross-leggedonthefloor,theincense,theherbaltea,thevegetarians,thewholedeal,butmymomwasgoingandIwasintrigued,soIwentalongwithher.Idalsoseenafewkungfumovies,andsecretlyIkindofthoughtImightbeabletolearnhowtofly,butIwasveryyoungatthetime.NowasIwasthere,Iguess,likealotofpeople,Iassumedthatitwasjustanaspirinforthemind.Yougetstressed,youdosomemeditation.Ihadntreallythoughtthatitcouldbesortofpreventativeinnature,untilIwasabout20,whenanumberofthingshappenedinmylifeinquitequicksuession,reallyseriousthingswhichjustflippedmylifeupsidedownandallofasuddenIwasinundatedwiththoughts,inundatedwithdifficultemotionsthatIdidntknowhowtocopewith.EverytimeIsortofpushedonedown,anotheronewouldjustsortofpopbackupagain.Itwasareallyverystressfultime. Iguesswealldealwithstressindifferentways.Somepeoplewillburythemselvesinwork,gratefulforthedistraction.Otherswillturntotheirfriends,theirfamily,lookingforsupport.Somepeoplehitthebottle,starttakingmedication.Myownwayofdealingwithitwastobeeamonk.SoIquitmydegree,IheadedofftotheHimalayas,Ibecameamonk,andIstartedstudyingmeditation. PeopleoftenaskmewhatIlearnedfromthattime.Well,obviouslyitchangedthings.Letsfaceit,beingacelibatemonkisgoingtochangeanumberofthings.Butitwasmorethanthat.Ittaughtme-itgavemeagreaterappreciation,anunderstandingforthepresentmoment.BythatImeannotbeinglostinthought,notbeingdistracted,notbeingoverwhelmedbydifficultemotions,butinsteadlearninghowtobeinthehereandnow,howtobemindful,howtobepresent. Ithinkthepresentmomentissounderrated.Itsoundssoordinary,andyetwespendsolittletimeinthepresentmomentthatitsanythingbutordinary.TherewasaresearchpaperthatcameoutofHarvard,justrecently,thatsaidonaverageourmindsarelostinthoughtalmost47percentofthetime.Forty-sevenpercent.Atthesametime,thissortofconstantmind-wanderingisalsoadirectcauseofunhappiness.Nowwerenothereforthatlonganyway,buttospendalmosthalfofourlifelostinthoughtandpotentiallyquiteunhappy,dunno,itjustkindofseemstragic,actually,especiallywhentheressomethingwecandoaboutit,whentheresapositive,practical,achievable,scientificallyproventechniquewhichallowsourmindtobemorehealthy,tobemoremindfulandlessdistracted.Andthebeautyofitisthateventhoughitneedonlytakeabout10minutesaday,itimpactsourentirelife.Butweneedtoknowhowtodoit.Weneedanexercise.Weneedaframeworktolearnhowtobemoremindful.Thatsessentiallywhatmeditationis.Itsfamiliarizingourselveswiththepresentmoment.Butwealsoneedtoknowhowtoapproachitintherightwaytogetthebestfromit.Andthatswhatthesearefor,incaseyouvebeenwondering,becausemostpeopleassumethatmeditationisallaboutstoppingthoughts,gettingridofemotions,somehowcontrollingthemind,butactuallyitsquitedifferentfromthat.Itsmoreaboutsteppingback,seeingthethoughtclearly,witnessingitingandgoing,emotionsingandgoingwithoutjudgment,butwitharelaxed,focusedmind. Soforexample,rightnow,ifIfocustoomuchontheballs,thentheresnowaythatIcanrelaxandtalktoyouatthesametime.Equally,ifIrelaxtoomuchtalkingtoyou,thentheresnowayIcanfocusontheballs.Imgoingtodropthem.Nowinlife,andinmeditation,therellbetimeswhenthefocusbeesalittlebittoointense,andlifestartstofeelabitlikethis.Itsaveryunfortablewaytolivelife,whenyougetthistightandstressed.Atothertimes,wemighttakeourfootoffthegasalittlebittoomuch,andthingsjustbeeasortoflittlebitlikethis.Ofcourseinmeditation(Snores)weregoingtoendupfallingasleep.Sowerelookingforabalance,afocusedrelaxationwherewecanallowthoughtstoeandgowithoutalltheusualinvolvement. Now,whatusuallyhappenswhenwerelearningtobemindfulisthatwegetdistractedbyathought.Letssaythisisananxiousthought.Soeverythingsgoingfine,andthenweseetheanxiousthought,anditslike,Oh,didntrealizeIwasworriedaboutthat.Yougobacktoit,repeatit.Oh,Iamworried.Oh,Ireallyamworried.Wow,theressomuchanxiety.Andbeforeweknowit,right,wereanxiousaboutfeelinganxious.Youknow,thisiscrazy.Wedothisallthetime,evenonaneverydaylevel.Ifyouthinkaboutthelasttime,Idunno,youhadawobblytooth.Youknowitswobbly,andyouknowthatithurts.Butwhatdoyoudoevery20,30seconds?(Mumbling)Itdoeshurt.Andwereinforcethestoryline,right?Andwejustkeeptellingourselves,andwedoitallthetime.Anditsonlyinlearningtowatchthemindinthiswaythatwecanstarttoletgoofthosestorylinesandpatternsofmind.Butwhenyousitdownandyouwatchthemindinthisway,youmightseemanydifferentpatterns.Youmightfindamindthatsreallyrestlessand-thewholetime.Dontbesurprisedifyoufeelabitagitatedinyourbodywhenyousitdowntodonothingandyourmindfeelslikethat.Youmightfindamindthatsverydullandboring,anditsjust,almostmechanical,itjustse
