Anewstudyhasfoundthatachild'sreadingspeedcanbeimprovedbysimplyincreasingthespacebetween,

letterswithinapieceoftext.Theresearch,ledbyDrStevenStaggofAngliaRuskinUniversity（ARU）,examined

thebenefitsofletterspacingandcolouredoverlays（顏色標(biāo)注）amongchildren.

Twogroupsofchildren,dyslexic（有閱讀障礙的）andnon-dyslexicchildren,wereaskedtoreadfourtexts

witheitherstandardorextra-largeletterspacing,bothwithandwithoutacolouredoverlay.Theywereinstructedto

readthetextoutloudwhilebeingrecorded.Therecordingwasusedtomeasurethenumberoferrorstheymade—

specificallymissedwords,addedwords,wrongwords,andpronunciation-aswellastheparticipants9readingtime.

Thestudydiscoveredthattestwithincreasedspacebetweenlettersprovidedabenefitforbothgroups.On

average,thedyslexiagroupshoweda13%increaseinreadingspeed,whilethegroupofnon-dyslexicchildren

showeda5%increase.Inadditiontoimprovingreadingspeed,italsoresultedinasignificantdeclineinthenumber

ofwordsmissedbythechildrenwithdyslexia.However,thestudyfoundthatcolouredoverlayshadnosignificant

impactonreadingspeedorthereductionoferrorsforeithergroup.

DrStagg,SeniorLecturerinPsychologyalARU,said:"Webelieveextra-largeletterspacingworksby

reducingwhatisknownasthe'crowdingeffect',whichcanhampertherecognitionoflettersandreducereading

speed.”

scansofmorethan1,500people'slungs.InapaperpublishedinOctober2021,theteamusedFHEtocollectdata

frommultiplesourcesandpredictedtheeffectofcancertreatmentsortheprocessofHIVinfection,asinFellay's

case.

Workable,butstillslow:calculationsontheFHE-encrypteddatacouldtakemillionsoftimeslongerthanthose
