aBroadmoor,Crowthorne,Berkshire,"50milesfromOxford.

MinorjoinedthearmyofvolunteerssendingwordsandquotationstoMurray.Overthenext

years,hebecameoneofthestaff'smostvaluedcontributors.

Buthewasalsoamystery.Inspiteofmanyinvitations,hewouldalwaysdeclinetovisit

Oxford.Soin1897,MurrayfinallydecidedtotraveltoCrowthornehimself.Whenhearrived,

hefoundMinorlockedinabook-linedcellattheBroadmoorAsylumfortheCriminallyinsane.

MurrayandMinorbecamefriends,sharingtheirloveofwords.Minorcontinuedcontributing

tothedictionary,sendinginmorethan10,000submissionsin20years.Murraycontinuedtovisit

Minorregularly,sometimestakingwalkswithhimaroundtheasylumgrounds.

In1910,MinorleftBroadmoorforanasyluminhisnativeAmerica.Murraywasattheport

towavegoodbyetohisremarkablefriend.

Minordiedin1920,sevenyearsbeforethefirsteditionoftheOxfordEnglishDictionary

wascompleted.The12volumesdefined414,825words,andthousandsofthemwerecontributions

fromaveryscholarlyanddevotedasylumpatient.
