PortfolioPortfolioPortfolioPortfolioPortfolioPortfolioPortfolioPortfolioAboutEnergyI-TheU.S.DepartmentofEnergy(DOE)investsbillionsofdollarseveryyearintotheNationalLabcomplex.ThisinvestmentallowstheDOENationalLaboratoriesandDOEplantsandsitestotacklethecriticalscientificchallengesofourtime—fromrenewableenergytoquantumcomputingtocreatingamoreresilientenergygrid.Thediscoveriesandinnovationsbeingdevelopedbythelabshaveanevengreaterimpactwhenweinvestinbringingtheseideastothemarketwheretheycanbenefitthenationandworld.EstablishedwithinDOEin2015,theOfficeofTechnologyTransitions(OTT)iscommittedtoexpandingthecommercialimpactofDOE’sresearch,development,demonstration,anddeploymentportfoliotoadvancetheeconomic,energy,andsecurityinterestsofthenation.EnergyI-Corps(EIC)becameapartoftheOTTportfolioin2018.Tobetterarmresearcherstocollaboratewithindustryandturnresearchanddevelopmentintodemonstrationanddeployment,
DOEemploysasuiteofeffortsundertheEICportfolio.Theseaimtohelpresearchersgainindustryinsighttoguideinnovationandadvanceenergy-relatedtechnologiestowardSince2015,DOEhasofferedtheimmersive10-to12-weekEICtrainingprogram,alsoknownas“TrainingCohorts,”acrosstheDOENationalLabsystem.In2023,theprogramexpandedtoincludeapre-TrainingCohortoffering,introducedasTopic1:PipelineDevelopment,andapost-TrainingCohortoffering,namedTopic3:PostEnergyI-Corps.UnderTopic1:PipelineDevelopment,DOENationalLabsandDOEplantsandsitesproposeprojectsaimedatincreasingtheirresearchers’applicationsforfutureTopic2:TrainingCohorts.UnderTopic3:PostEnergyI-Corps,graduatesoftheTrainingCohortsapplyforfundingtoaidtheirnextsteptowardcommercialization.

EICcomprisesfourkeyImplementationTeam:NRELisresponsiblefordevelopinganddeliveringthetraining,aswellasprovidingprogramguidancetoparticipatingNationalLaboratories,plants,andsites.ParticipatingLabs,Plants,andSites:ParticipatingDOENationalLabs,plants,andsitesrecruit,assemble,andsubmitapplicationsforeachcohort.TheDOENationalLabs,plants,andsitesplayanintegralroleinsupportingteamsbefore,during,andaftertheprogram.Supportmightincludeassistanceinidentifyingteammembers,aswellastechnologytransfer/technologydeploymentsupportforcommercializationplansidentifiedbytheteamduringtraining.Teams:ApplicantsapplytoEICasateamcomposedofaprincipalinvestigatorwithacommerciallyrelevanttechnology,anentrepreneuriallead,andanindustrymentor.Theteamworkstogethertoidentifypotentialcommercializationpathwaysfortheirselectedtechnology,aswellasopportunitieswherefurtherdevelopmentofthetechnologycouldleadtocommercialvalue.TrainingProgram:EnergyI-CorpsTopic2spans10to12weeks,utilizingacustom-designedcurriculum.Duringtheprogram,teamsattendin-personandvirtualsessions,participateinweeklywebinars,andlearnfromfacultyhowtosystematicallyidentifythemostappropriatemarketapplicationsandcommercializationpathwaysfortheirtechnologies.Participationrequiresaconsiderableamountoftimespentoutsideoftheclassroomconductingatleast75stakeholderdiscoveryinterviews.
