program.)Therehasbeensomegoodnews,too.TheDepartmentofDefensehas

increasedallocationsfbrbraininjuryresearchinrecentyears.Oneofthemostpromising

ncurotraumaprotocolscomesfromanEmoryUniversityresearcher,DonaldStein,whose

worksuggeststhatadoseofthehormoneprogesteroneadministeredwithin24hoursofa

braininjurycouldhaveaprofoundprotectiveeffect.Inthreeyears,aninjectionof

progesteronemightbestandardprocedureineveryemergencyresponsearsenal.Thebest

hopeforlegislativereformcomesfromtheNationalNeurotechnologyInitiativeAct,

introducedlastyear,whichcallsfor$200milliontoward"scienceandtechnologythat

allowsanindividualtoanalyze,understand,treatandhealthebrainandnervoussystem".
