BThe only way you can become a good reader is through practice. You can not read a few paragraphs in your English book once a week and become a fluent reader. You need to read constantly. You should carry something to read with you wherever you go.Take an English magazine, for example, and carry it in your pocket. Whenever you have the chance, turn on a page and read a paragraph or two. You should read in as many different subject areas as you can. You should try to find English books on different subjects and read a few paragraphs in each chapter in each book. Your eyes and mind need to practise. Your eyes need to practise moving quickly across the page from left to right, and your mind needs to practise making quick associations between the printed word and meaning. When you begin to read you should ask yourself a basic question: why am I reading this? If you are reading to practise your English, you will read in a certain way. You will read slowly and concentrate on the relationship between the words and the grammatical structures. If you are reading for information about a particular subject, you will read in another way. You will focus on main parts and supporting facts. You use the grammar of the passage as a means, not an end.Reading to practise English is the way most foreign students read English. In school you do not read English to learn about a particular subject; for example, you do not read English to learn history. You read English to learn how a sentence is put together, how the verbs agree with the subjects, what the clause is, etc. 25. To become a good reader you need to _. You read a newspaper differently from a textbook. C. Reading from right to left is an important skill. D. You should read only the material that interests you.27. When you are reading for information, you use grammar _. A. as a tool, not as your purposeB. as your purpose, not as a tool C. as both your purpose and a toolD. as neither your purpose nor a toolC Honesty may well be the best policy, but it often deserts us when no one is watching, psychologists report today. Experiments with an honesty box to collect payments for hot drinks show that people are better at paying up under the gaze of a pair of eyes. The surprise was that the eyes were not real, but photographed. Researchers at Newcastle University set up the experiment in secret. They attached a poster to a cupboard of mugs above an honesty box alongside a kettle, with tea, coffee and milk. Over ten weeks, they alternated(輪換)each week between images of eyes and pictures of flowers. Dr. Bateson, a behavioral biologist and leader of the study, said that even though the eyes were not real, they still seemed to make people behave more honestly. The effect may arise from behavioral characteristics that developed as early humans formed social groups that increased their chances of survival. Individuals had to co-operate for the good of the group, rather than act selfishly. “If nobody is watching us, it is in our interests to behave selfishly. But when we think were being watched we should behave better, so people see us as co-operative and behave the same way towards us,” Dr. Bateson said.“We thought wed get a slight effect with eyes, but it was quite striking how much difference they made. Even at a subconscious level, it seems people respond to eyes, and that might be because eyes send a strong biological signal we have evolved(進化)to respond to. ”The finding, which researchers believe sheds light on our evolutionary past, could be turned to practical use. The psychologists say images of eyes could promote ticket sales on public transport and improve monitor systems to prevent antisocial behavior. 28. The passage is mainly about _. A. the effect of honesty B. the evolution on honesty C. the policy of honesty D. the importance of honesty 29. We learn from the experiments that _. A. everyone is born to be honest B. people behave honestly to survive C. people become more honest with evolution D. eyes have a bigger effect on honesty than expected30. Christmas decorations in ones homeDToo often we accuse others of not listening, pretending that we ourselves are faultless, yet in our hearts we know that many of the mistakes we make come about because we havent listened carefully enough. We get things wrong because we havent listened carefully enough. We get things wrong because we havent quite understood what someone meant when they were talking to us. Anyone who has ever taken the minutes of a long meeting will know how hard it is to remember despite the benefit of notes exactly what everyone said. But success depends on getting things right and that means listening. Listening is not the same thing as hearing; it is not an effortless activity. It demands attention and concentration. It may mean quizzing the speaker for additional information or for clarificationIt is always better to ask than to continue regardless and get things wrong. However, if you allow your mind to wander onto something else, even for a few minutes, youll miss what the speaker is sayingprobably at the very moment when he or she is saying something critical. And not having heard, you wont know youve missed anything until its too late. The most common bad habit we have is to start thinking of what we are going to say about the subject long before the other speaker has finished. We then stop listening. Even worse, this often adds rudeness to inattentiveness, as once you have decided what to say there is a fair chance you will interrupt to say it. Good listeners dont interrupt. In fact it is often worth explaining the main idea of what you have just been told before going on to make your own points. Nobody is offended by this and it shows that you have listened well.Above all, be patient and accept that many people are not very good communicators. Its helpful to remember that the ways people move and position themselves while they are speaking can reveal a great deal about what they are saying. Equally importantly you should put yourself in the other persons place, both intellectually and emotionally; it will help you to understand what they are getting at and form a response. But dont be too clever. Faced with a know-all, many people keep quiet because they see no point in continuing.32. Which is the best title for this passage? A. Dont be too cleverB. Be a good listener. C. Dont miss anything criticalD. Think of the speaker33. In the last paragraph, the underlined phrase “what they are getting at” means _. A. what they implyB. what they want C. what they attackD. what they achieve34. What is the writers opinion? A. If you want to be a good listener, you should be very emotional. B. Speakers should talk before their listeners explain what theyve heard. C. If you dont want to get things wrong, its important to listen. D. Its hard to be a good listener because listening tests your intelligence.35. What is the lesson we probably can learn from this passage? A. Dont accuse others of not listening while talking with them. B. Dont get anything wrong if you miss what the speaker is saying. C. Listening inattentively may cost you your success. D. Think carefully of what youre going to say before the speaker finishes.第二節(jié) (共 5 小題,每小題 3 分,滿分 15 分) 根據(jù)短文內(nèi)容,從短文后的選項中選出能填入空白處的最佳選項,選項中有兩項為多余選項。 School phobia is a type of illness which causes the students, typically between the ages of 8-13, to be afraid to go to school. Symptoms include stomachaches, tiredness, shaking, a racing heart and frequent trips to the toilet. 36 Most commonly it is the result of separation anxiety, but it can also be caused by different kinds of stress. A child who has recently moved, suffered a loss, or gone through a divorce may develop school phobia, and phobias can also develop in response to an unrecognized learning disability, and poor self-image. 37 He or she may become physically ill when ordered to school, or pretend to be sick to avoid going. When the child arrives at school, he or she may run away, or develop behavioral problems in class. When school is discussed, the child can become impatient, upset or angry. Many techniques can be used to manage school phobia. But research suggests that much more effective treatment is required for school phobia to prevent problems developing in later life. Children with this condition usually benefit from seeing a psychologist or doctor. 38 . As soon as a school phobia is identified, parents should take action too. Like other phobias, school phobia gets worse if it is left untreated, and it can prevent the child from succeeding in school. 39 . If bullying (child abuse) is a cause, for example, the bullying situation should be solved. A teacher can meet the child at the door and take him or her to class, and provide support so that the child feels a friendly adult is always available.Changes at home can include supportive language from parents, along with support like assistance with homework. If a child lacks confidence, parents may encourage the child to take up new hobbies. 40 Parents might also talk to their children about their own fears of school and how they got over them, and their own enjoyment of school and school-like activities. A. It will help children to feel good about themselves. B. But a child with phobia refuses to accept adults support.C. A child with school phobia usually refuses to go to school.D. Adjustments can be made at home and in the classroom to help. E. This common phobia is associated with a wide variety of causes. F.
