7、istry.3. Fitzgeralds writing style.71.The Plot of The Great Gatsby: Gatsby is a poor youth from the Midwest. He falls in love with Daisy, a girl from a wealthy family. As a poor lad, Gatsby is too poor to marry her, so Daisy is married to a rich young man named Tom Buchanan. Determined to win Daisy
8、back, Gatsby engages himself in Bootlegging(非法制造私酒) and other illegal activities, thus earns enough money to buy a magnificent mansion. There he hosts dazzling parties every weekend in the hope of attracting the Buchanans to come. By chance his next-door neighbor, Nick Carraway, is Daisys relative a
9、nd he helps Gatsby to make an appointment. They finally come and Gatsby meets Daisy again. .81.The Plot of The Great Gatsby: But he finds Daisy is no longer the ideal love of his dream. A sense of loss and disillusionment come over him. Daisy and Tom do not really love each other. In fact, Tom has a
10、 mistress by the name of Myrtle Wilson, who is the wife of the owner of a garage. One day Daisy quarrels with Tom and in a fit of anger she drives Gatsbys car and kills Myrtle in an accident. In order to protect themselves, Daisy and Tom plot to shift the blame on to Gatsby, saying Gatsby has an aff
11、air with Myrtle and he kills her eventually. Myrtles husband George Wilson breaks into Gatsbys house and shots him to death. The Buchanans escape, and the only two people attending Gatsbys funeral are Nick and Gatsbys father, who reads the news in newspaper.9 Daisy Buchanan (黛西布坎南) an attractive but
12、 shallow and self-absorbed, young debutante and socialite(社會名流), identified as a flapper. She is the upper class.2.distinctive female characters.10 Jordan Baker(喬丹喬丹 貝克貝克) - Daisy s long-time friend with “autumn-leaf yellow” hair, a firm athletic body, and an aloof attitude. She possesses a fierce vitality, is desperate to find refuge from her complacent marriage, but unfortunately this leads to her

Women described in that book are . all pretty in appearance but hollow inside; .money oriented; .vainglorious; .selfish.2.distinctive female characters.13 The Great Gatsby exposes the representative figures human nature of falseness, indiff
16、erence and selfishness , under the cult of gold-worships trend. When the novel makes its character delineation , its words and plots are humorous and vivid. So, you may ask why Francis Scott Fitzgerald described women in such a way.14 The root reason of such description is the 1920ss social climate-
17、money is king. Background.15 The Jazz Age is the nickname in America of the decade of the 1920s, beginning from 1919 to the Crash at the end of 1929. It refers to the “Twenties” of this century . Fitzgerald was both a leading participant in the typically frivolous, carefree, money-making life of the decade and, at the same time, a detached observer of it.
