Intraditionaldestinationcountries,suchastheUnitedStates,however,laborneedshavechanged.Today,althoughthereisstilldemandforunskilledlabor,thereisincreasingdemandforpeoplewithahighlevelofskillandeducation.Theneedforlessskilledlaborhasshiftedtoothercountries.AsworkonfarmsandinindustryintheUnitedStatesandCanadaoncedrewworkersfromallovertheworld,nowworkinfactoriesinTaiwanandsouthKoreaattractsworkersfromVietnam,thePhilippines,andCambodia.
Mostglobalimmigrationislegal:however,alargenumberofpeoplealsomoveacrossnationalbordersillegallyinpursuitofemployment.Expertsestimatethatabout15to20percentofimmigrantsworldwideareintheirnewcountriesillegally.TheUnitedStateshasthelargestnumberoftheseimmigrants,followedbySouthAfrica,withsignificantnumbersalsoinNorthernandWesternEuropeandMexico.Theseimmigrantsfaceparticularchallengesbecausetheyoftenmusthidefromtheauthoritieswhomightdeportthembacktotheirhomecountries.Theirillegalstatusalsomeansthatemployersmaytakeadvantageofthembyforcingthemtoworklongerhoursandpayingthemlessthanthelegalminimumwage.
