Introduction
ThisEuropeanstandardisatypeCstandardasstatedinENISO12100.
ThispartofthisEuropeanstandardhasbeenpreparedtoprovideameansofconformingwiththeessentialsafetyrequirementsoftheMachineryDirectiveandtheLiftDirectiveandassociatedEFTAregulations.
Thewedgesocketconcernedandtheextenttowhichhazards,hazardoussituationsandeventsarecoveredareindicatedinthescopeofthisstandardpartofthestandard.
WhenprovisionsofthistypeCstandardaredifferentfromthosewhicharestatedintypeAorBstandards,theprovisionsofthistypeCstandardtakeprecedenceovertheprovisionsoftheotherstandardsforsymmetricwedgesocketsthathavebeendesignedandproducedaccordingtotheprovisionsofthistypeCstandard.

1Scope
ThisdocumentspecifiestheminimumrequirementsforsymmetricalwedgesocketterminationsforstrandedsteelwireropesconformingtoEN12385-5forlifts.
Thisdocumentcoversthosesymmetricwedgesocketsintendedforuseattemperaturesbetween-20℃and100℃.
Thisdocumentonlycoversthosesymmetricwedgesocketsthathaveweldedsocketbodies.AnexampleoftheconstructionandsizesofasymmetricwedgesocketisgivenininformativeAnnexA.
TheinformativeAnnexBgivestherecommendationsforthesafeuseandinspectionofsymmetricwedgesocketaccordingtoAnnexA.
Thisdocumentdealswithallsignificanthazards,hazardoussituationsandeventsrelevanttosymmetricwedgesocketsforterminationsforsteelwireropes,whenusedasintendedandunderconditionsofmisusewhicharereasonablyforeseeablebythemanufacturer.

4Listofsignificanthazards
ThisEuropeanstandardcontainsallthesignificanthazards,hazardoussituationsandevents,asfarastheyaredealtwithinthisEuropeanstandard,identifiedbyriskassessmentassignificantforthistypeofsteelwireropeterminationthatrequireactiontoeliminateorreducetherisk.
Inparticular,thehazardcausedbyaccidentalreleaseofaload,orreleaseofaloadduetofailureofasymmetricwedgesocket,putsatrisk,eitherdirectlyorindirectly,thesafetyorhealthofthosepersonswithinthehazardzone.
ErrorsinthefittingofaccessoriescanalsoleadtoprematurefailureandthisEuropeanstandardcontainsdimensionalandgeometricalrequirementstoallowcorrectfit.
Table1containsthosehazardsthatrequireactiontoreduceriskidentifiedbyriskassessmentasbeingspecificandsignificantforsymmetricwedgesockets.

Symmetricwedgesocketterminationsforropesshallconformtothefollowinggeometricalcriteria:
-thewedgeshallbesymmetric;
-theinternalsidesurfacesofthesocketbodyandthewedgeincontactwiththeropeshallbestraight;
一thegroovesofthebodyandthewedgeshallhavenosurfaceirregularities,suchas,protrusionsorjointswhichcouldinfluencetheintimatecontactwiththerope;
一theclampinglengthbetweenthesocketbodyandthewedgeshallbeatleast7,3timesthenominalropediameterd;
-theradiusofthewedgeatthebottomofthegrooveatthelargeendofthewedgeshallbeatleast1timesthenominaldiameterdoftherope.
5.2Securityofthepin
Thepinshallbeprovidedwithameansforsecuringitinpositionwheninoperation.
5.3Weldedsocketbody
TheweldingandalliedprocessshallconformtooneofthosespecifiedinENISO4063.Thepersonwhosupervisestheproductionprocessshallbetrainedinthechosenweldingprocess.
ThequalityoftheweldingjointshallbeinaccordancewithassessmentgroupBofENISO5817.Thereshallbenomelted-onweldchips.
Theligamentdistanceintherootoftheweldingjointshallbe1mmformaterialthicknessupto6mmand1,5mmformaterialthicknessmorethan6mmuptoandincluding12mm.Thepenetrationoftherootoftheweldingshallbeavoided.Thereshallbenoincreaseoftheweldingjointintheareaofcontactwiththerope.Theweldingjointshallhaveabondingareaofatleast70%atthejointedge.
Anyoffsetoftheedgesofthebodyhalvesshallbelimitedto0,5mmformaterialthicknessupto6mmand0,8mmformaterialthicknessmorethan6mmuptoandincluding12mm.

5.4Mechanicalproperties
5.4.1General
TherequiredmechanicalpropertiestakeintoaccountthatsymmetricwedgesocketsincombinationwithstrandedropesforliftstoEN12385-5havetobeusedwithaminimumcoefficientofuseof5forliftinggoodsand12forliftingofpersons.
5.4.2Terminationefficiency
Whentestedinaccordancewith6.2.2,theefficiencyoftheassembledterminationshallbeatleast80%oftheminimumbreakingforceoftheropewithoutanymovementbetweentheropeandtheterminationandanydeformationofthewedgeandthesocket.
5.4.3Fatiguebehaviourofthesocketbodyandpin
Whentestedinaccordancewith6.2.3thesocketbody,wedgeandpinshallnotexhibitanyindicationsofcracksafter75000loadcycles.
Thesocketandwedgeshallalsoexhibitnosignoflocalpermanentdeformation.
5.4.4Lowtemperatureproperties
Thematerialofthesocketbodyandpin,whentestedinaccordanceto6.2.5shallpossessaminimumlowtemperatureductilityat-20℃asfollows:
MinimumaverageCharpyimpactvalueat27J,withnoindividualvaluelessthan18J.
6Verificationofsafetyrequirements
6.1Qualificationsofpersonnel
Alltestingandexaminationshallbecarriedoutbyapersoncompetentforthepurpose.
6.2Typetesting
6.2.1General
Twotypetestsshallbecarriedoutforeachrequirement,inaccordancewith6.2.2to6.2.3onassembledterminationsofeachdesign,materialandmethodofmanufacture,usingthehighestminimumbreakingforceofropeasdefinedinEN12385-5forwhichthesocketisdesigned.
Ifthedimensionalcriteria,thematerialorthemethodofmanufacturearesubsequentlyvariedoutsidetheusualmanufacturingtolerances,thetypetestsshallberepeated.
ThetestingmachineshallconformtotherequirementsofENISO7500-1.
6.2.2Tensileefficiencytest
Subjecttheassembledterminationtoaninitialloadof60%oftheminimumbreakingforceoftherope,thenincreasetheloadingatarateofnotmorethan0,5%ofthebreakingforcepersecondinthetensiletestingmachine.Thetestshallbecontinueduntileitherropebreaksorslipsoutofthesocket.
Ifterminationsaretestedinpairs,thedistancebetweentheinnerfacesofthesocketbodiesshallbeatleast30d.

6.2.3Fatiguetest
Thetestshallbecarriedoutonanin-linetensilefatiguemachine.Theterminationshallnotbeallowedtorotateandthetestshallconsistoftheapplicationofthecycleforcefrom15%to30%oftheminimumbreakingforceoftheropealongtheropeaxisfor75000cycles.
Thefrequencyoftheforceshallnotexceed5Hz.
ThecomponentpartsshallbesubjecttodyepenetrantinaccordancewithENISO23277ormagneticparticleinspectioninaccordancewithENISO17638,bothbeforeandafterthefatiguetesttoenableanycrackpropagationasaresultoffatiguetobereadilyidentified.
NOTE1Morethanoneropecouldberequiredtoenablethesocketbodytoachieve75000cycles.
NOTE2Fornon-weldedenclosuresthetestaccordingtoENISO17638ispreferred.
6.2.4Acceptancecriteriafortypetesting
Iftheassembliespassalloftheabovetests,thesymmetricwedgesocketofthesizesubmittedfortypetestingshallbedeemedtoconformtothisEuropeanstandard.
Shouldonesamplefailthesetests,andonexaminationitisfoundduetoadefectinthesocketbodyorpin,themanufacturingprocessshallbere-examinedandamendedtoeliminatesuchdefects,afterwhichafurthertwoassembliesofthesamesize,designandmaterialcontentshallbetested.Ifthesepasstheabovetests,thesymmetricwedgesocketofthesizesubmittedfortypetestingshallbedeemedtoconformtothisEuropeanstandard.
Ifoneorbothfailthere-test,thesymmetricwedgesocketofthesizesubmittedfortypetestingshallbedeemednottoconformtothisEuropeanstandard.
6.2.5Charpyimpacttest
CharpyV-notchimpacttestshallbecarriedoutinaccordancewithENISO148-1onmaterialofsocketbodiesandpinsofallsizes.Threesamplesshallbetestedatatemperatureof-20℃.
IfoneofthethreesamplesoftheCharpyimpacttestfailstheindividualvaluetestorthethreesamplesfailtheaveragevaluetest,twofurthersamplesshallbetakenandbothshallpasstheindividualvaluetestandtheaverageofthefivesamplesshallpasstheaveragetestinorderfortherespectivecomponentofsizesubmittedfortypetestingtobedeemedtoconformtothisEuropeanstandard.
Iftwoorthreesamplesfailtheindividualvaluetest,therespectivecomponentofthesizesubmittedfortypetestingshallbedeemednottoconformtothisEuropeanstandard.
NOTEIfthematerialthicknessofthesocketisbelow5mmandthereforeprecludestheproductionofanotchedtestspecimeninaccordancewithENISO148-1,thentheverificationmaybeomitted.
6.3Manufacturingtestsandexamination
6.3.1Manufacturerstests
Socketbodyandpinshallbesubjectedtothemanufacturingproofforceequaltoaloadof40%ofthehighestminimumbreakingforceofropeforwhichthesocketisdesigned.Thisshallbesustainedwithoutdeviatingfromthedimensionsofthemanufacturer'sdrawings,andwithoutvisibledefectafterremovaloftheload.

6.3.2Visualexaminationofweldedsocketbodies
Weldedsocketbodies
Thesocketbodyshallbesubjectedtovisualexaminationbyacompetentperson.Thevisualexaminationshallcoveratleastthefollowingfeatures:
—faults,includingflaws,cracksand'melted-on'weldchips,arisingfromthemanufacturingprocess;
一penetrationoftherootoftheweldingseam;
—theligament;
—faultsarisingfromthesurfacefinishorthefinishingprocess;
-indicationswhichmightbecracks.
Anysurfacedefectthatbreakstheedgeofthepinholeshallresultinthesocketbeingrejected.
Wedgesandpins
Thevisualexaminationshallcoveratleastthefollowingfeatures:
-faultsarisingfromthemachineryprocess;
-distortionand/orcracksarisingfromtheheattreatmentprocess;
-faultsarisingfromthesurfacefinishorfinishingprocess;
-anyindicationswhichmightbecracks;
-anysurfacedefectthatbreakstheedgeofthepinholeshallresultinthesocketbeingrejected.
6.3.3Weldtesting
Theweldingparametersaretobedocumentedfortheadoptedweldingprocess.
Abreakingtestshallbedoneforeverychargeofmaterialfortestingtheweldingparametersandforjudgingthequalityoftheweld.
Linkageareaonthejointflanksistobeatleast70%.
6.4Manufacturingtestandexaminationregimeandacceptancecriteria
Themanufacturershallvisuallyexamineallterminationinaccordancewith6.3.2plusapplyamanufacturingproofforceon1(one)pieceofthelotofsocketbodiesandpinsinaccordancewith6.3.1.
Themanufacturershallalsocarryoutaweldteston1(one)pieceofthelotofthesocketedbodiesinaccordancewith6.3.3.
Themanufacturershallalsosubjectonesampleofsocketbodyandpinperlottothetensileefficiencytestasdescribedin6.2.2.
Ifthesamplefailstheweldtestorthesamplefailsthetensileefficiencytest,twofurthersamplesshallbetakenfromthesamelotandtested.
Ifoneorbothofthesesamplesfailtheweldtestorthetensileefficiencytest,theentirelotshallbedeemednottoconformtothisEuropeanstandard.

Themanufacturerofthesocketbodyshallprovidefittinginstructionsthatshallincludeadviceonthediameter,classandgradeofropeforwhichthesocketisdesigned,methodofassembly,inspectioninuseandre-terminatingiftheropeisshortened.
Themanufacturer'sinstructionsshallincludeinformationonthetemperaturerangeofuse.
NOTERecommendationsforsafeuseandinspectionofsymmetricwedgesocketconformingtoAnnexAaregivenforinformationinAnnexB.
7.3Manufacturer'scertificate
Themanufacturershallsupplyacertificatewitheachsymmetricwedgesocketterminationorbatchofsymmetricwedgesocketterminationsstatingthefollowing:
a)nameandaddressofthemanufacturer;
b)descriptionandnominalsizeorsizerange;
c)thattheterminationsareidentical,withinmanufacturingtolerances,withthosethathavepassedthetypetests;
d)thattheterminationsconformtothisEuropeanstandard;
e)sizeofpinforwhichthesocketisdesignedifthesocketissuppliedwithoutapin;
f)detailsforwhichtypeofropestheterminationissuitable(e.g.strandedsteelwireropesforliftsasdefinedinEN12385-5).
