Howwouldsuchastoryend?Withsomekindofreveal,nodoubt,ofasecretagendalurkingbehindthe

promiseofall-encompassingknowledge.Forinstance,maybethere'saTmthEngine2.0,smarterandmorecreative,

thateveryonecan'twaittogettheirhandson.Andthenabandofdissidentsdiscoverthatversion2.0isfanatical

andmad.thattheEnginehasjustbeenpreparinghumansfortotalitarianbrainwashingorinvoluntaryextinction.

Thisflightoffancyisinspiredbyoursociety'sownversionoftheTruthEngine,theoracleofGoogle,which

recentlydebutedGemini,thelatestentrantinthegreatartificialintelligencerace.Itdidn'ttakelongfbrusersto

AfricanandAsianfacesinWehrmachtuniformsinresponsetoarequesttoseeaGermansoldiercirca1943.

ButthewayinwhichGeminiansweredquestionsmadeitsnonwhitedefaultsseemmorelikeaweird

emanationoftheA.L'sunderlyingworldview.UsersreportedbeinglecturedonUharmfulstereotypes''whenthey

askedtoseeaNormanRockwellimage,beingtoldtheycouldseepicturesofVladimirLeninbutnolAdolfHitler,

andturneddownwhentheyrequestedimagesdepictinggroupsspecifiedaswhite(butnototherraces).Describing

thesekindsofresultsas“wokeA.I."isn'taninsult.It'satechnicaldescriptionofwhattheworld'sdominantsearch
