Paper cutt ing has long been a symbol of Easter n charm.There are symmetrical( 對稱的)designs that

Chinese cut-outs are normallysymmetrical and are usually in an even number series of 2, 4, 24,etc.The oldest surviving paper cut-out is a symmetrical circle from the early 6thcen tury found inXinjia ng, China. 3、rom the 7th to 13th cen tury, papercutti ng becamepopular especially duri ng Chin ese festivals. The art spreadto the rest of the worldin the 14th century. Throughout the Qing Dynasty many paper cutting skills were developed includingdrafting and the use of smoked papers. By the end of the Qing ruli

4、ng,however, paper cutt ing was once on the decli ne because new art forms were being in troduced. TheRepublic of China later tried to revive the art in the 1980s.Today, paper cut-outs are chiefly decorative. They decorate walls, windows, doors, colu mns,mirrors, lamps and lanterns in homes and are a

5、lso used on prese nts or are give n as gifts themselves.Entrances decorated with paper cut-outs are supposed to bring good luck. Paper cut-outs used to beused as patter ns, especially for embroidery(刺繡).There are two methods of manufacture: one uses scissors, the other uses kni ves.In the scissor me

6、thod, several pieces of paper up to eight are fastened together. The image is then cut with sharp, poin ted scissors.
