ideaofthoughtingeneral.Itsoonbecameclearthatwewere
notsurewhatwemeantbysuchtermsasthoughtandthinking.
Wetendtoassumethathumanbeingsthink,somemorethanothers,
thoughweoftencallpeoplethoughtlessorunthinking.Dreams
causeaproblem,partlybecausetheyusuallyhappenoutsideour

significantattentionhasbeendevotedtothestudyofthe
interviewitself.Ontheotherhand,manygeneraltextsaswell
asnumerousresearcharticlesoninterviewinginfieldsother
thanjournalismhavebeenwritten.Manyofthesebooksand
articlespresentthetheoreticalandempiricalaspectsofthe
interviewaswellasthetrainingoftheinterviewers.
Unhappily,thisplentifulgeneralliteratureabout
interviewingpayslittleattentiontothejournalistic
interview,whichseemstobesurprisingfortworeasons.First,
itseemslikelythatmostpeopleinmodemWesternsocietiesare
morefamiliar,atleastinapositivemanner,withjournalistic
interviewingthananyotherform,ofinterviewing.Mostofus
areprobablysomewhatfamiliarwiththeclinicalinterview,
suchasthatconductedbyphysiciansandpsychologists.In
thesesituationstheprofessionalpersonorintervieweris
interestedingettinginformationnecessaryforthediagnosis
andtreatmentofthepersonseekinghelp.Anotherfamiliar
situationisthejobinterview.
However,veryfewofushaveactuallybeeninterviewed
personallybythemassmedia,particularlybytelevision.And
yet,wehaveavividacquaintancewiththejournalistic
interviewbyvirtueofourrolesasreaders,listeners,and
viewers.Evenso,theunderstandingofthejournalistic
interview,especiallytelevisioninterviews,requires
thoughtfulanalysesandevenstudy,asthisbookindicates.
