heads, seeing itas awaste ofvaluable learningtime. However,I willgive anaffirmative answerwithout hesitation, because thisexperience canapparently benefitus inmany ways.First,it isa greatopportunity forus to apply theknowledge wehave acquiredat college.Different fromtemporary part-time jobs,a longervolunteer workexperience istruly fulfillingand rewarding. As Englishmajors,we canlearn touse andteach the language effectivelyin realclasses;as educationmajors,we canexperiment withthose textbooktheories inhelping managea schoolor instructthe younger;those whostudy engineeringcan takethis chanceto turntheir ideas and skillsinto runningmachines, new bridgesand broadroads. From thisexperience,we will better understandour schoolworkand evenbuild upconsiderable expertisein ourchosen fields.Second,we cangain agreat sense of satisfactionby makingcontributions inan underdevelopedregion.Right now,the westernChina issuffering fromboth theshort?age ofresources andthat oftalents inits course of development. If we can stepinto theneeded rolesby simplysacrificing ayear ortwo,we will be ableto makesome differ?ence to the situationas awhole.Imagine howproud youwill bewhen tellingyour fami?ly andfriends howyou havetaught theilliterate toread, and howyou havehelped tochange thelook ofa backwardtown.Compared with the greatsenseofpride youfeel, ayears time is justa smallprice to pay.Third,we canestablish adeep friendshipwith localpeople. On theone hand,if youtruly love and helpthe peopleyou work with, they naturallyloveandhelp youback.Take asenior Iknow forexample, who servedtwo monthsas ateacher ina drynorthwestern town.During theperiod ofwater shortage, both hisstudents and their parentsvoluntarily keptwater forhim, sometimes despitetheir ownneed.Recalling hisdays there,he saidthey werenot easybut hecould not help missingthem.Probably manyvolunteers wouldfeel the same ashim. While we are givingcare, support andhelp,we oftenget backmore includinga lastingfriendship. Therefore,I willreadily signup tovolunteer in the westernChina despitevarious challengesI maymeet.Think of the differenceswecanmake there and thechanges thisexperience canmake tous, why notwalk out of theivory towerand steponto thepromising landof our country?Should NetworkGames BeBanned inCollege? It isa prevailingpractice thatuniversity studentsplay work games in their sparetime forrelaxation. Some teachersand parentshold thenegative opinionthat manystudents areso obsessedwith work games that they playtruant, and otherseven mita crimefor onereason oranother.Others dont agree. As faras Iam concerned, the criticalpoint iswhether thestudents cankeep a balance between study andgames. Some thoughtthat playingwork games will costa lotof timeand energy, which shouldotherwise bedevoted to their academic study. After all, timeislimited forcollege students and its themost fundamentalduty for them tostudy andlay asolid foundation in knowledge. And thecontent of the workgames issometimes violentand bloody, which isnot suitablefor students. It isalso reportedthat somestudents areso addictivetothe workgamesthat theyeven dont goto classand sitin frontof theputers allday long.Their worriesand considerationsare justified, but we should notgive upeating forchoking.First, life in college isnot easy.Students have to workhard to learn andatthesame timethey havemuch pressurefrom theirparents orothers.Playing workgameswillhelp them to relaxand beimmersed ina virtualworld. The restof heartis importantin themodern society.Second, students willlearn moreabout team?work in theworkgames.People ina teamcooperate andhelp eachother towin thegame. The experience is vividand worksbetter thanany lecture.Third, students meetdifferent peopleon the Inter, and learn to getalong with them indifferent ways.It mayendow thevery studentwith the ability toestablish abetter personalrelationship withother people, which meansa lotwhen theyenter thesociety. To sumup, for universitystudents, the priorityshould begiven toacademicstudy.A poorperformance inachievement testswont makeus petitivein thefuture. But allwork noplay makesJack adull boy.Appropriate restand relaxationin theworkgamesworld willrefresh aperson andhelp himtolearnsomething. The collegestudents areall adults, and theyknow clearlywhat theyshould doand whatthey shouldnt, and have theabilityto controltheir behaviors. So theymust strikeabalancebetweenstudyand workgames, and givedue weighttothestudies.Should UniversitiesCharge HighTuition Fees?Nowadays, most universitiesrequire students topayfor theireducation, and thetuition feeshave beenstaying veryhigh. Some peopletake the development of the universitiesinto considerationand supportthe highfees, while othersthink the high cost of universityeducation isa heavyburden formany families. As faras Iam concerned, universities arenot institutionsfor profits, which shouldbe placesfor excellentstudents tolearn andfurther studyequally,so theyshould notcharge high tuition feesthat somefamilies cannot afford. In thefirst place, the hightuition fees make thefamilies save money for the chil?dren insteadof consuming.A universitystudent willneed12,000yuan eachyear onaverage, which isalmost theine ofa couplewho arewage earners. In other words,a familywith anaverage inewill spendtheir long-term hard-earned savings,or theywill beindebted.Whats worse, most familiesines in our countryare belowthe averagelevel. The highfeesmakethe peoplesavemoneyfor the childrens educationeven beforethey areborn. In thesecond place, thehightuition feeswill deprivethechildrenfrom poorfami?lies of their rightof education.Entering universitieson theirabilities isthe onlyhope for the poor studentstochange theirdestiny. But theincreasingly highertuition feesmake itimpossible. The statisticshows thatthere were60%70%students ingfrom thecountry areaswhen thecharging systemwas notintroduced. But nowthe percentageis only30%or so.The universitieswill beethe paradiseof childrenfrom richfamilies, and thepoorstudentswillbeforced toleave. Finally,it willbe muchmore difficultfor thegraduates to find jobs.Driven by the profitsof hightuition fees, universities recruitmore andmore studentsyear byyear. The outeof expansionleads tothe lowstandard ofenrollment andlow quali?ty ofeducation. The supplyexceeds demand;there arenot somany jobsforthegraduates,so mostof themcan notfind jobswhen gettingoutofschool. All inall, hightuitionfees in the universitieswill influencethedevelopmentofthesociety andharm theinterests ofstudents. The universitiesshould chargereasonable tuitionfees, provide equalopportunities forstudentsandtake theresponsibility ofmolding thefuture ofour nationCan CollegeVillage HeadsPlan ReallyHelp?Due tothe GrandCollege EnrollmentPlan, the number of universitygraduates hasbeen on the increasesince thecentral governmentstarted implementingthe plan.Though the plan helpsimprove ournational quality,it createspressure forthe job markets. With somany collegestudents ingout ata time, many graduateshave difficultiesin findingsuitable jobs.In orderto create more jobs, the governmentencourages college graduates to work invillages ofourcountrywith aview thatrural administrationwillbestrengthened atthesametime. As aresult, tens ofthousands of college graduateshave beenappointed as village officials in the rural areas. It appearsthat thisplan helpsalleviate thepressure causedby graduateemployment, but Ido notthink the plan willwork in the long run.Firstly, after servingasvillage officialsin the rural areas fortwo years, the majorityof thosecollege village officials willstart tolook forjobs in the jobmarket again,ag?gravating thepressure ofthe jobmarket. Some mayargue thatthe number of thosevil?lageofficialswho enterthe jobmarket againis balancedby thenumberofnew college graduates whowould beappointed asvillageofficials. The truthis thatwhile thosestudents have spent twoyears in therural areas, they do not gainenough experienceinthe corporate worldand arelikely toforget whatthey havelearnt incollege. In thissense, they arenot guaranteedtofinddecent jobsagain.Besides, when workingintheruralareas, these studentswith higherdegrees arerespected byvillage people, and arelikely toget austomedto feelingsuperior topeople aroundthem. One canimagine they wouldprobablybe frustratedwhen theyworkwiththose whohold thesame collegedegrees oreven higherdegrees.Secondly, when thesupply of college graduatesandthe demand ofour societyare unbalanced, the imbalancecan beobtained byincreasing availablejobs ordecreasing thesupply ofcollege graduates, which meansthe reductionofcollegeenrollment.Given thefact thatthe economyslows downrecently,it isdifficult tocreatemore jobs. While offeringgood termsfor graduatessuch aswell-paid salaryand residentialcertifi?cate guarantee, the governmentcan createmorejobsintheshort term, but does not providelong-term remedy. In thissense, theplandoesnotsolve thefundamental imbalancebetween thesupply andthedemandofcollegegraduates. In sum, theplanto encouragecollegegraduates toworkintheruralareascan onlyprovide atemporary remedyforthejobmarket.I thinkthe governmentshould recog?nize thefundamental imbalanceand findthe wayback toelite education.Should WeBan InterSlang inNews andFormal Documents?Nowadays,we frequentlyread thewords inthe newspapers, magazines orontheInter, likePKdinosaursand soon. These areall Inter slang terms.Whether toallow orforbid theseterms in news and formal documentshas beea hottopic as the banis introducedin Shanghai. The publicholds differentviews onthe regulation. From whereI stand, astheinevitable resultof socialdevelopment,Inter slangshould not be bannedin newsand formal documents.Firstly, many Inter slang termsare widelyspread andmonly usedamong youngpeople.Since wecan findthem usedhereandthere, there aregood reasonsfor themto existin ourlanguage.Indeed,Inter slangterms tendto beshort, simple, and catchy,so it is easyto thinkand usethemtoexpress ourmeanings.Even alittle childcan understand, remember andspeak afew ofthose words. Moreover, withthedramatic increaseof izensand rapidexpansion ofcyber-munities,thelanguagethey usehas formedsuch aninfluential forcein real life thatmany people, especially theyouth, think itfashionable totalk withsome Netterms. As Interslang istaking rootinourlanguage,it isnot reallypossible toforbid its use pletely.Secondly, there isno needto stopusing new words createdonline. Some Interwords, such as“download“,“l(fā)inkandhomepage, are nowused regularly. There isnothing wrongwith them.Society isalways changing, and languageneeds tokeep up.Chinese shouldbe ableto absorbnewwordsthat areuseful forspeakers. In addition, the newspapersshould tellpeople whats goingoninreallife.Though ingfrom virtualworld,Interslanglargely derivesfrom realmunications betweenpeople, reflecting theirtrue thoughtsand servingtheir actualneeds ofexpression. Then, why cant itbe usedinthe news?Hence,it isnot necessaryto bantheInterslang inthe newspapers andformaldocuments. In addition,it isnot practicalto enforcethe ban.How wouldthe localauthorities monitorthe mediaefficiently andeffectively? How shouldthe governmentpunish thosewho breakthe regulation? There arescores ofnewspapersandmagazines andmillions offormaldocumentsproduced everyday ina bigcity.Supervising theuse oflanguage inall ofthem istoo time-consuming andexpensive,if notimpossible. Why notsave theenergy forsomething thatis morecrucial topeoples life?Of course, misuse ortoo muchuse ofInterslanginnewsarid formaldocuments couldbring anumberofproblems. However, the abovediscussion indicatesthat weshould notand couldnot forbiditsusetotally. The bettercourseofaction isto be more carefulwhen usingthem aswearewiththechoice ofotherwords, considering itsparticular featureand style.Should CompaniesOnly Focuson Experience? As oneresearcher observed,“At presentmany paniesdonottrust newgraduates, who mayhave learnedmountains oftheories butlack practicalabilities.,F(xiàn)or manypanies, theywouldlike torank workingexperience astop requirementin theirrecruitment programs. But,asamatter offact, collegestudentshavespentyears intaking pulsorycourses andselective courses, how canthey aumulaterequired experienceincollege? They can nothelpwondering whetherpanies shouldlay theiremphasis on experience whenrecruiting collegegraduates. As forme, paniesfocus on experience isshort-sighted,and hencepanies shouldnot onlylay stressonexperience.Firstly, what liesbehind theirfocus onexperienceisthe motivationto cutexpenditure inemployee training.Another considerationis thatexperienced employeescan produceimmediate profits. For thoseemployers, they aremore interestedin makingmoney inthe presentthan cultivatingtalents forthe long-term benefits. They seemto lacklong-term strategiesof panydevelopment.Generally speaking, prestigious paniesthat havelasted fora dozenyears, even hundredsof years, always havea systematicplan fortalents training. They wouldlike to bear theburden ofnew employeetraining expenditureforthelong-term benefits. How canwe expectthose paniesthat areapathetic torecruit collegegraduatestoreap profitsinthefuture withoutenough supplyof talentedemployees?Secondly, while therecruitment ofexperienced employeescan produceshort-term profits,it ishard forthose experienced employees toidentify withthenewpaniesculture, and therefore, panies have to sufferfrom highemployee attritionrates.Companiescultural identitieshave beenconsidered increasinglyimportant tomaximize productivityby holdingboth employeesand employerstogether.Loyal employeesare willingto standby theirpanies intimes ofups anddowns. When employeesfrequently eand go,panies haveto bearnew hiringcosts, costs oflost productivity, cost ofknowledge, skills andcontacts thatthe personwho isleaving istaking withthem outoftheprevious panies.Obviously, the totalexpenditure ofrecruitment ofexperiencedemployeesinthelong termis likely to transcendthe expenditureof trainingloyal employeesinthebeginning. In sum, panies focusonexperienceis indicativeofthemotivation ofproducing immediateprofits bycutting expenditurein traininginexperienced collegestudents. In thelongrun, panies arelikelyto bear morecostofhigh attritionrates. Therefore, panies shouldnot onlyemphasize onexperience andshould giveopportunities tocollegegraduatesso lliatthey canreap long-term profits.Should WeReturn toComplex ChineseCharacters? As onefamous professorstated,“One canonly appreciatethe beautyof ancientChinese literaturethrough theplex Chinese characters.”What theprofessor wantsto conveyis thatplex Chinese characters aremanifestation oftraditional Chineseaesthetics. However, since thefoundation ofthe PRC,China beganto adoptsimplified Chinese characters,so thatilliteracy canbemoreeasily eliminated.Undoubtedly, the introductionof simplifiedChinese characterscontributes toChinas modernization. So whena memberofthenational mitteeof CPPCCproposed thatweshouldreturn to plex Chinese characters, ongoing debatesensued withvehemence.Personally, itisimpractical toreturn to plex Chinesecharacters, but individualscan voluntarilymake effortsto knowplex Chinesecharacters.Firstly, since
